Digital and social media marketing has continued to increase in 2016, and now into 2017. Techno-savvy marketers continue to apply the lessons and tricks learned last year to increase their conversion rates. You need to watch the emerging digital marketing trends to remain at the top of the game. The leading brands continue to sharpen their digital marketing tips each day. Artificial intelligence and machine learning happen to be one of the largest trends in 2017. Machine learning approaches apply across numerous techniques such as Social Media and Organic Search Marketing, Marketing Automation, and Big Data. Review the top five marketing trends discussed below to learn more.

1. Increased Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing includes Social Customer Care and Social CRM (Customer Relationship Management). Research show many digital marketing merchants use social media as one of the best platforms for engaging audiences. This year, social media amplification will dominate the business world. The usage of social media continues to increase in many countries. Research also shows that Pinterest, Instagram, and Snapchat usage have recorded dramatic growth in a majority of western markets while Facebook and Twitter usage has significantly decreased. The efforts of the social network to monetize substantially control the digital marketing trends.

2. Declining Mobile Marketing

Mobile marketing includes apps, site development, as well as, mobile advertising. Mobile marketing has decreased in the past three years, as many firms continue to adopt mobile responsive email and web design templates. Even direct conversions have significantly reduced on Smartphones. However, mobile has a massive impact on Internet marketing. Most online shoppers still use a tablet, laptop and desktop devices. Well-established companies are now investing in adaptive mobile design technologies. Such approaches have more contextual and relevant content for the users and remarkably minimize loading times. The best option for online marketers is to treat mobile marketing as an integral part of a multi-channel or multi-platform strategy. Apart from countries where users only utilize desktop and mobile, multi-platform ribbons have increased in many nations.

3. Increased Marketing Automation

Marketing automation includes web personalization, behavioral email marketing, as well as CRM. Just like content marketing, marketing automation has remained in the top three for the last five years. Majority businesses still have the potential of elevating their automation prowess.

4. Increased Use of Big Data

Big data marketing apps include predictive insights, as well as, customer and market insight. Big data is a fundamental element of digital marketing that lead to an increase in data formats, real-time data, and sales volume. Personalization is another efficient and tested way of increasing sales on sites. Email marketing also boosts sales via predictive analytics. Big data is usually mined to identify the propensity to convert different customers based on the behaviors and customer characteristics.

5. Content Marketing Trends

In the past three years, content marketing has remained in the top three digital marketing trends. Top brands are now focusing on creating integrated content marketing strategies to improve their digital marketing approaches. Over 40 percent of firms have now embarked on using strategic approach and the trend is expected to hit its peak before this year ends. ROI (Return on Investment) content marketing measuring is also expected to increase. The new trends are emerging due to the increased competition and costs within content marketing. Content marketing is also expected to enjoy more interactive marketing apps with high capability of recommending and personalizing content. Organic Search or SEO (Search Engine Optimization approaches will be quite vital to watch in 2017 owing to the recent announcement by Google concerning AMP and mobile Index. Since Sept last year, Google has continuously rolled up AMPs, and this has resulted in increased Smartphone traffic. Businesses with effective blog tools can also target AMPs but they are mainly used by publishers.

Other Digital Marketing Trends To Watch in 2017

  • Multi-channel and Omni-Channel Attribution: The two channels work together to synergize each other. Many digital marketers continue to seek advice on using an integrated marketing approach.
  • Machine learning is also likely to increase in the coming months.
  • Employee feedback and advocacy: Businesses are ready to improve their internal marketing perspectives.
  • Digital Out-of-Home (OOH): This is another surprising trend that has emerged in 2017.
  • Videos and Images: Videos and visuals have remarkably surged in the past few months. Generation Z and Millennial cohorts are the primary consumers who have embraced videos and pictures as an efficient way to gather and share information.

Apart from the above digital marketing trends, other trends are likely to emerge before the year ends. The above five techniques include the core methods that most digital marketers will employ to increase their conversion rates. Online merchants and shoppers now have the best opportunity to select an alternative that best suits their personal taste, as well as, preferences.

2016 Backlinking Strategies

Quality Backlinking Strategy for SEO in 2016

Posted on Posted in digital marketing, SEO

Backlinking in 2016 is extremely important for SEO ( i.e. getting high Google rankings) as most of you webmasters are familiar with. This is not an easy process, and you will learn all too well when building an SEO strategy for your site there are some techniques that are cheap and easy and some that will assure high-quality but more expensive to accomplish the task.

Moz Study

Backlinks continue to be closely related with higher rankings than almost any other website attribute according to the most recent study by Moz. The findings in this study gave a new way of looking at high ranking sites.

The Influence of Ranking Factors in Google's Algorithm
via Moz

For example, there is a lower correlation between on page keyword use and rankings. In the past the conventional thought was that a high correlation exists, and this is probably because Google wasn’t as intelligent before. They have a newer definition on what pages mean, in other words, a page can be a related keyword, synonyms, close variants and entities without relying on exact keyword phrases. Matching the user intent is of the greatest importance in getting high rankings.

One of the ways to make use of this new information is to gather high-ranking backlinks by searching for for sites that have changed names. Also useful are sites that have shut down and moved to another URL. These sites are different than the broken links that were useful before. Then find the sites that are linking to the old page and tell them of the outdated link. In explaining the process the new links will be directed to the new site and qualify as high ranking links. This strategy was coined by Brian Dean at Backlinko as the “skyscraper technique.”

The search for these sites should not be that hard but the time is well spent. Sometimes a business will shut down certain Google features that were once popular and had many quality backlinks. The business may not have deleted the page but instead just put it out of order and kept the backlinks intact. This is golden as you can search for these sites by using terms like “service no longer available” which will bring many results. Then use a broken link checker on that page to see which links are available.

By adding the link to your site and exporting all the backlinks pointing to that page to an Excel or Google spreadsheet, you will be able to contact all the sites that are viable and that still link to the outdated page. A simple email is usually all that is necessary to convince the site to link to yours. This is a big job, and is often performed at a large scale by SEO companies, like this one:

Customer Testimonials

Another method to gain valuable backlinks is through customer testimonials. Products that deserve useful testimonials will often secure the positive and valuable testimonials from the satisfied customers. When you do this you can then ask the customer to put the testimonial on their homepage and then you will have a backlink to your site without usually having to ask for it.

This method is usually free, and can be extremely effective since homepage links are very powerful.

Outsource It

There are lots of companies out there that build backlinks for you. For a flat monthly fee, a content marketing company will generate hundreds of natural backlinks by growing your social media presence, blog, and other online properties simultaneously. They provide high-quality videos, articles, and social media graphics that are designed to steadily increase your online presence by providing organic, quality backlinks that grow naturally.

This method proves to be the most scalable, but also relatively expensive. You’ll find a lot the time you’re going to have to make an upfront investment before ever seeing a return. If you select the company, though, you’ll be all set with a long-term strategy aimed at giving long-lasting results for years to come.

Reach Out

An additional way to gather backlinks is to ask for them. A well phrased email that is short and concise will bring some success, but it’s time consuming. The results are generally positive and the links that are received are good and viable. It is important to make sure that the site allows for the email request and is not using an ‘Add URL’ form. If they have this form on the site your email may be ignored and that’s just a waste of time.

One emailing tip: no one appreciates getting a “Dear So and So” email so some effort should be made to secure the correct individual and use their name in the email. A catchy salutation like Dear Site Owner is better than “To Whom It May concern”. Be professional in asking for the link and assure the owner that you are not a spammer and the yield on this type of request should be high and productive.

I would highly suggest you look into outsourcing your campaign as soon as possible. 2016 SEO Updates

3 Most Important SEO Updates of 2016

Posted on Posted in SEO

Website owners and search engine optimization services must gear up for the SEO challenges of 2016. The Google landscape is constantly changing, and you should be always on alert for new updates so you can harness search engine algorithms in your favor. Here are some of the things we believe to be the most important SEO updates/factors in 2016.

Local SEO

Local is the flavor of the season. You would want to capitalize on the numbers of searchers looking for a particular business in a specific location. The rise and success of local SEO efforts can be attributed to the massive increase in the use of mobile devices to search for location specific businesses. It’s been shown by several Google search studies that a significant majority of searchers will use the local results to actual visit the business within a few hours of searching. This means you would need to ensure people within the neighborhood can locate your business easily.

Businesses are also advised to focus on location when offering information on blogs or social media. Local happenings and points of interest are key factors, in addition to business related news. This will help your business get high visibility in search results.

Kasem Bajwa, from iFlex Studios, is a pioneer in local SEO, and offers the following advice:

In your Google My Business and other business citations, you’ll need to be more specific about the details of the business. Everything from contact information to physical address will enable search engines to ascertain your importance as a business in the locality. You will want to list your business in location specific business directories and keep your information updated.

Local SEO is a complex topic, and more can be found at the iFlex website if you’re interested in learning more.

Create Mobile-Friendly Websites

Google’s latest update will pull down the rankings of sites that are not mobile friendly. Being visible to desktop users is not enough anymore. Mobile users, who form a significant chunk of site visitors, need to be catered to. That means responsive sites and major updates for people who use mobile phones to browse the web. Without it, you’ll lose not only search engine rankings, but also a profitable customer base. You can use Google’s mobile friendly tester to test your own site here.

Quality Linking

Backlinks have always been important to search engine rankings. In 2016, what matters more than ever is linking in a way that search engines don’t consider spam. It’s not a lot more risky to leave links on online forums and article directories, so the trend is to put links into a relevant, high-quality content. Being very niche specific is of utmost importance in 2016 since search engine algorithms are beginning to understand topics. Instead of general article directories, you would want to post content to credible, reputable niche relevant blogs and websites. You can then post a link within your content, to get traffic to your site.

categories and tags WP

Content Categorization

Content must be clearly tagged so that search engine bots can categorize them easily. The biggest advantage here is that your website might get to rank as an answer snippet to commonly asked questions. This will boost your credibility and bring more traffic to your site.

In addition to text content, you must also try to create engaging graphics and picture content, to be able to rank high in all these factors. With highly optimized images, you’ll actually start to see traffic come from Google and Bing image searchers.

A notable mention to the top three is Social media. Social continues to play an important role in helping build interactive audience, and thus boosting credibility and visibility online.  It’s important now more than ever that you increase you’re online presence and start responding to and engaging with your customers through things like Twitter, Facebook pages, and G+. You’ll soon have loyal followers raving about your brand and recommending your services to their friends and family.

Well that’s it. These are some of the things you must look out for, as you build your SEO strategy in 2016.

Do you see other things playing an increasing role lately? I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below!

Digital Marketing

What is Digital Marketing?

Posted on Posted in digital marketing

If you think about it, what really is digital marketing? What does it encompass?

Basically Digital/Internet Marketing covers every bit of marketing done online, i.e. everything from search engine marketing, like Google AdWords, to Social Advertising, like Facebook Ads, to Social Media Marketing, to Email Marketing.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is an extremely large part of digital marketing. Essentially, SEO is what takes your website to the first page of search engines where people are usually finding all of their information. If you have a service or product, you want your website to be at the top because that’s where everyone lands. Rarely do searchers go to the second page, so SEO builds your authority to rank you on page one.

SEO is big business. Most businesses want to focus on their business, and what they are good at. That leaves a very large market for specialized companies to come in and serve those business owners. To see one of these full-scale companies in action, check out Gravitii, an Asheville SEO company. With these agencies popping up in every city imaginable, one can see how much of a demand there really is.

SEM, on the other hand, is mostly the displaying of ads in search results. You buy ad spots in Google or Bing search results through their ad platforms (Google AdWords and Bing Ads) and your information will show up in one of the ad positions when someone searches for the keywords you bid on. SEM is less sustainable than SEO because you have to constantly be paying for your position in search results. Ranking with SEO is more ideal, but requires an up front investment with no return for several months.

Next to SEO, content marketing is a big part of digital marketing. It’s a large task in your marketing plan, and you’ll find it to be rather daunting. It first starts with building great content that’s easily shareable. This requires extensive research into trending topics in your industry and keywords. Then you need to promote, which usually entails massive outreach to influencers in your niche, which can turn into 100s of emails back and forth for securing links, as well as social media campaigns.

Then there’s Conversion Rate Optimization. This is where your landing pages are optimized for converting the traffic into leads or customers. Quite an important job. It involves installing analytics, watching heat maps, and split testing elements. This is one of the most important things. Probably even more so than SEO since if you’re not converting the traffic then you’re wasting your money ranking your website to the top of Google.

Social media marketing is another branch of internet marketing, and it’s a little more in depth than just social media management. Social media marketing is basically the use of social platforms to display advertisements (similar to SEM above) of your brand to get people to clickthrough to your website and perform an action. Social media marketing is slightly better than SEM, in my opinion, because you can really drill down to your desired audience. In AdWords, there isn’t much information about your audience, other than their location, but with Facebook advertising, you have all of their page likes, topics they mention, their employment, and spending habits.

I’ll be writing a lot more about each of the topics above to give a much more detailed view of each, so keep an eye out and make sure to subscribe!

The 4 Things A Business Should Focus On For Internet Marketing

Posted on Posted in digital marketing

Any successful business needs to have a concrete marketing plan for their online presence. Below, you’ll find the top areas you need to have down to be successful online.

1) Social Media

Social Media is a must for all businesses. It serves as social proof for your services, and many people look at how many fans you have on social media before considering your business. Make sure you have the top 5 social media platforms setup.

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. LinkedIn
  4. Google+
  5. Pinterest

2) Search Engine Optimization

If you aren’t showing up in Google, then you’re losing out on a ton of customers and potential revenue. A huge percentage of new customers come from search engines because that’s where they start looking. It’s even more important for a local business, such as local services, trades, restaurants, etc., because you’ll be getting local reviews and be seen in the Google or Bing map. This is another great form of social proof, and can really skyrocket your business.

3) Content

SEO usually has some sort of content plan, but you’ll also need to focus on your social media content. I’ve seen many businesses fail at their social media and blog content because they treat it like advertising space. The goal with your content is to be informative and provide value, not to sell them on your services.

The idea is to have great content that people will want to read and subscribe to, which eventually builds your authority and makes people want to use your services.

4) Analytics

Analytics is huge when you need to know what’s going on with your website. You will definitely need Google and Bing webmaster tools, Google analytics, and a heatmapping tool, like Hotjar. These tools will let you know how people are using your website so you can optimize it for a better experience, user flow, and better conversions. There is actually another term, called CRO, which stands for Conversion Rate Optimization. CRO is what you want to be doing when reworking your website so you can convert the traffic you’re getting. If you’re not converting, then all that traffic will be going to waste.

Well there’s a brief overview of what you should have for your business to dominate the internet. I’ll be touching on all of these topics more in depth in later posts, but basically each of these items usually require outside consultation from paid professionals. When it comes to internet marketing, many businesses have been burned and hate the idea of having to vette a new contractor. I’ll also be sharing some tips on how to find those rockstar pros that will really help your business.
